Keep the past in your heart while you soar high

As I write this, I am the saddest I have been in years. Our history is so full of flesh-shed, bloodshed, death and times when humankind mastered his own kind. From slavery to the various revolutions, history weeps with the episodes of gut wrenching and tearful stories of man wronged by man. How was that possible? Given any circumstance? How could one be so cruel? We cannot be proud of such times, under any circumstance. What had we become in the past? No more human. Inflicting pain upon others could give pleasure to some of our ancestors. Ashamed of my kind. Every time I watch a movie, read an article, tearfully finish a book, witness a documentary dealing with a true story, it makes me go nuts. I feel the responsibility, I feel the agony, I sense those questions my mind raises, demanding an answer, when I am only numb. I am never afraid of horror movies or rides or virtual reality crazy coasters because, I know in the end it is not the reality but just a creative fantasy. But, a ...

Totka! Really?

Every development seems futile when you come across certain incidents in life. Our domestic help, say Mala, shared her fears with me today. She is a hardworking woman, who helps with the daily chores of 4-5 homes and earns her living. She is a single mother of three children- one married daughter and two younger boys (around 5-6 years old). She wears a bold crimson line on her forehead, even after her husband and she have separated. She says, it makes her feel safe and preven ts bitter questions, at least on her face. Well, that is another long story. Today, she seemed unwell. When I asked her, she started crying like a baby and said, " Didi , you know what a totka is? Somebody did that on my house. They wrote my name, my daughter's name and other things on a paper along with some hair, chicken's beak, peacock feather, et cetera . I am afraid what will happen now, to me, my children. They are so young. They cannot even fight for themselves. This has been running on my m...

Dear Mumma, I hate it when you have to fast may it be any damn festival- teej or whatever, But, today is Halchhath. I hate it all the more because you have to fast for your kids- for us! Why can't we just keep the celebrations on while letting go of the suffering of fasting and foregoing your medical dosage? Well, that apart, this is to thank you for being an amazing parent- flawless you are. I don't know how you manage to be so despite being who you are- lazy mama ;) But you are amazing in ways no one, mind you NO ONE else is. You are an angel who has taken us into your wings and give us he strength to go forth in life unbaffled by the successes and failures of our life. If not for you, giving up would have been my favourite hobby. Thanks or turning me into one adamant, incurably optimistic girl that I am today. I love you more than I can ever express. I love you because you so cool, you are so much fun to gossip with and you the just the person I love to cry wit...

The Man Who Knew Infinity

Image
People come and people go, but there are some who continue to live post their physical existence. These people are human but are no less han God for their contributions to humankind. One such man is the man who knew infinity. Source: http://cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/lifeoframanujan-130601062235-phpapp02-thumbnail-4.jpg?cb=1370067937 As I grew up under the wings of my mathematician mother, I had heard of him often. But hanks to my love hate relationship with this beauty of a subject- I hardly cared to know who this genius was. On his death anniversary yester year, my mom's department held a competition on the contribution of the greatest mathematicians of all times and so I read about Srinivasa Ramanujan, quite many essays as I helped my mother choose the victor of the competition. There are prodigies, there are impeccable people, but this man surprises me everytime I read or hear about him since then. I felt more intrigued a he helped me solve a questio...
